Amid the frenzied game of musical judges that has broken out at "American Idol," returning czar Nigel Lythgoe makes precisely the right point: Star power matters way less than chemistry. The failed experiment with Ellen DeGeneres, and perhaps with Kara DioGuardi, makes it clear that a hot showbiz brand isn't what the hiring committee should be looking for.

Maybe J.Lo or Steven Tyler would be the greatest judge since King Solomon. But not because she's got a big butt or he's got a big mouth. It would be because they worked with Randy Jackson, or whomever, to create a new judging pod that transcends their individual personalities and becomes unique to "Idol."

Ellen DeGeneres couldn't be talked into staying with "American Idol," a Fox executive said Monday, creating a second opening for change in the show's 10th season.

Who will fill her judge's chair and the one vacated by Simon Cowell were questions left unanswered by Peter Rice, chairman of entertainment for the Fox Networks Group.

"There are no deals signed on either side of the camera" with newcomers, Rice told a meeting of the Television Critics Association.

Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have been reported as front-runners for the panel. Rice said some of the media speculation about the future of "American Idol" were accurate and that some were "wildly inaccurate."

He also declined to discuss the status of original judge Randy Jackson, reports that Kara DioGuardi might be in jeopardy after two years on the panel or whether former "American Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe is in talks to return.

Reports that the singer-dancer-actress' deal to join the judge's panel next season is done are premature, according to two insiders close to the show. Fox has a deal "in principle" with Lopez but she has not signed on the dotted line.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were the picture perfect family as they frolicked on the beach with their adorable twins yesterday. Anthony joined Lopez in Malibu as she worked on a Gucci photo shoot with two-year-old Max and Emme.

Despite having been married for six years the couple looked like newlyweds, sneaking kisses during breaks and strolling the beach hand in hand. When they weren't locking lips the love struck singers played the role of devoted parents, paddling in the sea and swinging their children around in the air.

We told you Jennifer Lopez was backing out of a concert in North Cyprus after receiving backlash because of the political situation in the region. Of course, it’s not just as easy as saying ‘Oh, no thank you, nevermind’ because the scoop is that Jennifer may be facing a lawsuit if she doesn’t go through with the performance.

Jennifer Lopez may be sued for up to $40m (£26.5m) after pulling out of a concert in northern Cyprus. Although booked for a concert in the island's Turkish-occupied north, the US singer cancelled her appearance last week, citing the "political realities" of the region.

But according to the owners of the resort where Lopez was to perform, politics matter much less than the fine print of the singer's contract. "The cancellation ... is not covered by any clause in the contract she signed with us," insisted Murat Bozoglu, CEO of the Istanbul-based company. "The contract has not been terminated," he told Agence France-Presse. "If she does not show up for the concert, we will begin a procedure in the courts to claim $35-40m in damages."
